First Shovel

Bruna, new in Finland, waves at her old neighbour every morning. He never waves back. Then she sees what he does at 5 am.

An animated young woman with gold hoop earrings and an older man in a yellow knitted hat laugh together in the snow outside their red and yellow houses.
The story

Finland and Brazil

Winter in Finland. Bruna is new here, all the way from Brazil, and every morning she waves at her old neighbour Eero with a bright “Bom dia!” Every morning he gives a shy little nod and turns away.

Then one snowy morning her path is already cleared. And the next morning, and every morning after that. At 5 am, through her frosted window, she finally sees who it is. It is him. Eero never waved. He cleared her path instead.

So Bruna answers him in his own way. Before dawn, she shovels his path. When his door opens, Eero gives her a small, stiff wave, her way, and she calls out “Huomenta!”, his word for good morning. They laugh together as the sun comes up.

Not everyone says hello the same way.

The film is on its way to our YouTube channel.
