Life around the world

What is life like in the UK?

Daily life in the UK runs on small, shared rituals: a cup of tea offered the moment you arrive, a chat about the weather that is really a way of saying hello, a pub that works as the living room of the neighbourhood. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland each do it a little differently, and people there will happily tell you how.

An ordinary day

A day in the UK

Many people commute by train, bus or the Tube in London, and the working day often ends around half past five. In winter it is already dark by then, which makes the evening feel like it starts early.

Lunch is often quick, a sandwich or a meal deal. The evening meal, often called tea in the north of England and in Scotland, comes around six or seven.

Weekends mean the high street, football, a walk in the countryside even in the rain, and for many families a long Sunday lunch.

Small rituals

The things people do without thinking

  • A cup of tea. Offered to every guest, every builder, every friend who has had a hard day. Saying yes is part of the conversation.
  • The local. The neighbourhood pub, where people of every age meet. Taking turns buying a round is a quiet social rule.
  • The weather. Not small talk so much as a shared language. It is the easiest way to start talking to anyone.
  • Bonfire Night. On 5 November, fireworks and bonfires across the country, with people standing in the cold together, holding something warm.
Ask someone there

Questions worth asking

The best way to learn what life is like somewhere is to ask someone who lives there, and to listen. These questions tend to open a real conversation:

  • What do you have in your tea, and how many cups is a normal day?
  • What is your local like, and what makes a good one?
  • Where you live, what do people call the evening meal?
  • What does a proper Sunday look like for you?
  • What is something about your part of the UK that the rest of the country does not get?
