Life around the world

What is life like in Canada?

Canada is the second largest country in the world by area, and most people live within a few hundred kilometres of the US border. Daily life in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver or a small town on the prairies can be very different, but the seasons, especially winter, shape life almost everywhere.

An ordinary day

A day in Canada

Winter is a real part of life: in many places snow, short days and cold mornings for months. People dress in layers, warm up the car, and still go skating, skiing or out to the rink.

Many people grab a coffee on the way to work, and lunch is often quick. Dinner is usually around six or seven.

In summer, people make the most of the long days: barbecues, lakes, camping, and for many families in Ontario and Quebec, weekends at a cottage.

Small rituals

The things people do without thinking

  • Hockey. Played on rinks and frozen ponds, watched in living rooms and bars. Early morning practice is a childhood memory for a lot of Canadians.
  • Two languages. English and French are both official languages. In Quebec, daily life happens mostly in French, and plenty of people switch between the two.
  • Thanksgiving in October. Canadian Thanksgiving is on the second Monday of October, with family and a big shared meal.
  • Saying sorry. A polite "sorry" is a reflex, said when someone else bumps into you too.
Ask someone there

Questions worth asking

The best way to learn what life is like somewhere is to ask someone who lives there, and to listen. These questions tend to open a real conversation:

  • What does winter actually feel like where you live?
  • Do you speak English, French, or both, day to day?
  • What is a perfect summer weekend for you?
  • Have you always lived in the same province?
  • What is something about your part of Canada that the rest of the country does not get?
