Life around the world
What is life like in Nigeria?
Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa, with hundreds of languages and three big ones you hear everywhere: Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo, with Pidgin English as the easy bridge between them. Daily life in Lagos, Abuja, Kano or Port Harcourt can feel very different, but music, food, faith and family run through all of it.
A day in Nigeria
In the big cities, the day is shaped by the commute. People leave early to beat the traffic in Lagos, by bus, in shared taxis or in their own cars, and a lot of the day’s phone calls happen in the car.
Markets are part of everyday life: fresh food, fabric, phones, everything in one place, with bargaining as a normal part of buying.
Weekends belong to people. Saturdays are for weddings, birthdays and other big parties, and Sundays or Fridays for church or the mosque, followed by family time.
The things people do without thinking
- Greeting elders. Respect for older people shows in how you say hello. In many Yoruba families, for example, young men traditionally bow and young women kneel slightly.
- Jollof rice. Rice cooked in a rich tomato and pepper sauce, at every party worth going to. Who makes the best jollof is a friendly debate across West Africa.
- The owambe. A big celebration with music, dancing, matching outfits for family and friends, and far more food than anyone can eat.
- Music everywhere. Afrobeats from shops, buses and phones. Nigerian music is heard around the world, and at home it is the soundtrack of the street.
Questions worth asking
The best way to learn what life is like somewhere is to ask someone who lives there, and to listen. These questions tend to open a real conversation:
- What does a normal weekday look like for you, from leaving home to getting back?
- Which languages do you speak at home, and which with your friends?
- What is the best party you have been to, and what made it good?
- Who makes the best jollof in your family?
- What is something about your city that people outside Nigeria never hear about?
