Life around the world
What is life like in France?
Daily life in France makes room for small pleasures on purpose: fresh bread every day, a real lunch break, an apéro with friends before dinner. Paris is only one version of it. Life in Lyon, Marseille, Brittany or a village in the south has its own pace, and people there are proud of the difference.
A day in France
Many mornings start at the boulangerie. Lunch is often a proper sit-down meal, and in many workplaces and schools it is taken seriously, with time set aside for it.
Dinner is later than in the UK or the US, usually around eight, and it is a time to sit together and talk rather than eat quickly.
Summer has its own rhythm: in August many people take long holidays at once, and some city neighbourhoods go quiet while the coast fills up.
The things people do without thinking
- The daily bread. A fresh baguette bought on the way home, often with the end already eaten before the door.
- L’apéro. A drink and something small to eat with friends or neighbours before dinner. It can last ten minutes or the whole evening.
- La bise. Greeting with a kiss on each cheek. How many kisses depends on the region, and everyone has an opinion about it.
- Sunday lunch. A long family meal, sometimes stretching into the afternoon.
Questions worth asking
The best way to learn what life is like somewhere is to ask someone who lives there, and to listen. These questions tend to open a real conversation:
- How many kisses for la bise where you live?
- What does a normal lunch break look like at your work or school?
- What would a perfect apéro be for you?
- What is your region known for that people outside France never hear about?
- Where do you go in August?

The Daily Fuse, the hour when the most people are around, starts every day at 17:00 UTC. That is 18:00 in France today.
