Life around the world

What is life like in Pakistan?

Daily life in Pakistan moves to the rhythm of family, prayer times, chai and late, sociable evenings. It is a young country with big cities like Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad, mountain valleys in the north and long traditions of hospitality, and a guest is rarely allowed to leave hungry.

An ordinary day

A day in Pakistan

The day often follows the five daily prayers, which give it a steady shape from dawn to night. Work and university fill the middle of the day, and in the big cities traffic decides a lot.

Evenings are when life opens up. Dinner can be late, and afterwards people visit family, go out for chai, or meet friends at a dhaba or a food street.

Family is close and often large. Cousins grow up almost like siblings, and big decisions are rarely made alone.

Small rituals

The things people do without thinking

  • Chai. Strong, milky and sweet, served at home, at work and at roadside stalls. Turning down a cup is harder than accepting one.
  • Wedding season. In the cooler months, roughly November to February, weddings fill the calendar, often over several days of music, food and family.
  • Cricket. Played in streets, parks and courtyards everywhere, and a national event when Pakistan plays.
  • Hospitality. Guests come first. A visitor is offered food and the best seat, and staying for one more cup is expected.
Ask someone there

Questions worth asking

The best way to learn what life is like somewhere is to ask someone who lives there, and to listen. These questions tend to open a real conversation:

  • What does a normal evening look like for you after dinner?
  • What is the best food in your city, and where would you take a visitor?
  • How does your family celebrate Eid?
  • What is wedding season like where you live?
  • What do people abroad most often misunderstand about everyday life in Pakistan?
