Life around the world

What is life like in Saudi Arabia?

Daily life in Saudi Arabia follows the sun and the prayer times. Much of the year the middle of the day is hot, so a lot of life happens in the evening and late at night. Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam and smaller towns each have their own feel, and hospitality, coffee and family sit at the heart of all of them.

An ordinary day

A day in Saudi Arabia

The five daily prayers give the day its shape. The working week runs from Sunday to Thursday, and the weekend is Friday and Saturday.

Evenings are the busiest part of the day. When the heat drops, families go out to eat, walk, shop or meet friends, and many cafes and restaurants stay open late.

Family is close, and big family gatherings are common, often at a grandparent’s home, with plenty of food and children everywhere.

Small rituals

The things people do without thinking

  • Arabic coffee and dates. Gahwa, a light coffee with cardamom, poured into small cups and served with dates. Offering it is the first thing a host does.
  • The majlis. A sitting room for guests, where people gather to talk, drink coffee and pass the evening together.
  • Ramadan nights. During Ramadan the rhythm of the day turns around: the fast breaks at sunset, and the evenings and nights fill with family meals and visits.
  • Desert trips. In the cooler winter months, many people head out to the desert to camp, cook and sit by a fire under the stars.
Ask someone there

Questions worth asking

The best way to learn what life is like somewhere is to ask someone who lives there, and to listen. These questions tend to open a real conversation:

  • What does an ordinary evening look like for you?
  • How do you take your coffee, and who in your family makes the best?
  • What is your favourite part of Ramadan?
  • Where would you take a visitor in your city?
  • What is changing fastest where you live right now?
