Life around the world
What is life like in Egypt?
Daily life in Egypt runs late and runs together. Cairo is one of the biggest cities in Africa and barely seems to sleep, while Alexandria lives by the sea and towns along the Nile keep a slower pace. Everywhere, conversation is a big part of the day, over tea, over food and on the street.
A day in Egypt
Breakfast is often ful, slow-cooked fava beans, with ta’ameya, the Egyptian falafel made with fava beans, and fresh bread. Many people buy it from a street cart on the way to work.
The working week runs from Sunday to Thursday for many people, with Friday and Saturday as the weekend. In Cairo, traffic decides a lot about the day.
Evenings start late and go on late. People meet at a café, walk along the Nile or the seafront, or visit family, and dinner can come well after nine.
The things people do without thinking
- The ahwa. The neighbourhood coffee house, where people sit outside for tea, coffee, backgammon and long talks about everything.
- Tea with mint. Strong, sweet tea, sometimes with fresh mint, offered at home, at work and in shops.
- Ramadan lanterns. In Ramadan, streets and balconies fill with colourful lanterns called fanous, and the evenings fill with family meals.
- Jokes. Egyptians are known across the Arab world for their humour, and a quick joke is part of almost every conversation.
Questions worth asking
The best way to learn what life is like somewhere is to ask someone who lives there, and to listen. These questions tend to open a real conversation:
- What is your favourite breakfast, and where do you get it?
- What does a normal evening look like where you live?
- Which café or ahwa do you go to, and what makes it yours?
- What is Ramadan like in your street?
- What do people abroad most often get wrong about everyday life in Egypt?
