For people in grief
Grief doesn't follow a schedule or ask permission. It arrives on Tuesday mornings and holidays and in the middle of ordinary moments. What you need, more than anything, is somewhere to put it — a real person who will hear you.
The people around you want to help, but grief makes people uncomfortable. They don't know what to say. They rush toward fixing or consoling rather than just staying present with the weight of it. After a few weeks, most people expect you to be better — or at least to appear better — even though grief rarely works on that timeline.
There's also the particular exhaustion of being the person who lost someone — having to manage other people's discomfort with your grief while also experiencing the grief. You end up performing okay-ness for the benefit of people who care about you, while the actual weight stays unexpressed.
Research on bereavement consistently points to the same finding: what grieving people need most is witness. Not solutions, not reassurance — just someone who will sit with them in the reality of the loss and not flinch from it. The instinct to 'do something' is understandable but often unhelpful.
Talking about the person you lost — saying their name, describing what they were like, recounting a specific memory — is part of how grief moves through you rather than staying stuck. The problem is finding someone to do that with who won't try to redirect the conversation toward healing or silver linings.
Grief counselling helps many people. Bereavement groups help others. But there are large stretches of time between sessions, and grief doesn't wait for them. The 2am wave, the unexpected anniversary reaction, the moment when you see something on the street that reminds you — these moments need somewhere to go.
