Unexpressed emotion is not neutral. It lives in the nervous system as unresolved activation — and it has physical effects.
When the body encounters a stressor — physical or emotional — it activates the stress response: heart rate increases, muscles tense, cortisol and adrenaline release. In a physical threat, this activation is discharged through action — flight or fight. Emotional distress often does not have an equivalent discharge mechanism, and the activation persists as chronic low-level stress in the body.
Talking about the emotional stressor, particularly to someone who is genuinely listening, facilitates discharge. The act of putting the experience into language, processing it through speech, and experiencing the co-regulatory effect of another person's presence together reduce the activation. The body settles.

An attuned listener who is calm and present communicates safety to the speaker's nervous system, facilitating the downregulation of the stress response. This happens below the level of the cognitive content of what is being said — it is physiological, not just psychological.
