Social anxiety
You are in the conversation and simultaneously watching yourself have it. Monitoring your expression, your posture, your volume, how you come across. The self-observation uses up all the mental resources you need to actually connect.
Social anxiety researchers call it self-focused attention: a state in which your cognitive resources shift from attending to the conversation partner to attending to yourself as a social object. You become absorbed in monitoring your own performance rather than engaging in genuine dialogue. The irony is that this self-monitoring, designed to prevent embarrassment, actually creates the stilted, disconnected quality it was trying to avoid.
When you are hyperaware of yourself in conversation, you listen less effectively because your attention is split. You miss cues, respond to the wrong things, or take too long to respond because you are processing your own internal state rather than what the other person actually said. The conversation feels effortful and artificial in a way that genuine exchanges should not.
Genuine connection happens when attention flows outward, toward the other person. Hyperawareness keeps it locked inward, on yourself. The other person can feel this, often without knowing why. Conversations feel pleasant but somehow not quite warm. They do not progress to intimacy. They stay in a kind of polite surface territory. Over time, hyperawareness quietly prevents the conversations that would otherwise become friendships.
Reducing hyperawareness requires practising the shift of attention outward: genuinely listening, being curious about the other person, tracking what they are saying rather than monitoring how you appear. Mindfuse gives you a low-stakes space to practice this. Anonymous voice calls with real strangers. The stakes are low enough that self-monitoring has less reason to activate, giving you room to practice genuine presence. First conversation free, €4/month.
