Sport and mental health

A large study of 1.2 million Americans found that team sports produced better mental health outcomes than any other form of exercise. The reason is the people, not the sport.

Exercise is good for mental health. Team exercise is dramatically better. The research is clear and the mechanism is not mysterious: it is the social component that makes the difference.

The research

Team sports reduced poor mental health days by 22.3% — more than any individual sport or cardio activity.

A 2018 study published in The Lancet Psychiatry, drawing on data from 1.2 million Americans, found that regular exercisers reported 43% fewer days of poor mental health than non-exercisers. When broken down by activity type, team sports — cycling, swimming laps, and running all came lower — produced the greatest benefit. The researchers attributed the advantage to social belonging: the sense of being part of a unit, of having shared purpose, of mattering to a specific group of people.

The social dimension is not a nice bonus on top of the physical benefit. It is the primary mechanism. People who exercise alone in gyms get meaningful benefit. People who exercise as part of a team get substantially more. The team is the treatment.

If you are managing difficult mental health and exercising solo, joining a team or group of any kind is likely to produce substantially better outcomes than intensifying your existing solo practice.
