Language learning is the highest-leverage social investment for people in non-English-speaking countries — even basic competence dramatically changes the quality of social interactions. Local activities (sport, volunteering, classes in the local language) provide the repeated contact with the same people that friendship formation requires. And patience: the social adjustment period for an international move is typically longer than for a domestic one.
